The next generation of energy experts
by EDDIE
On 11th April 2025, the University of Vienna Computer Science student project kick-off on energy data access took place in the main university building due to the large number of applicants (well over a hundred). A very interested and participating audience saw presentations by Oliver Hödl and Wout van Voornveld, project coordinator and data architect in Project EDDIE respectively. The student project involves the gathering and representation of energy consumption data using the standards adopted by Project EDDIE’s data space for energy (the Common Information Model or short CIM).
As project EDDIE matures at a high speed, so did the quality of the presentations, currently in its fifth edition. Oliver Hödl enriched his general introduction into the implications of the implementing regulation on access to metering and consumption data by the final customer with IoT aspects of the Project EDDIE’ s residential home demonstrator and the barrier-breaking advantages of the EDDIE framework for energy service providers.
Wout van Voornveld sketched the need for both strong semantics and flexibility, the legal and political minefield of standardisation and explained how the CIM building blocks play a part in this. New this time was the elaboration on demand response from his own experience as a flexibility customer with Solar PV, EV charging point and stationary batteries at his own home.
The Q&A section raised interesting points, which holds a promise for the future when some of the students will devote their talents in the energy sector.
